The Stora Sjöfallet waterfall in the Luleå River was called the “Niagara of the North” before regulation. The area around the waterfall was designated Stora Sjöfallet National Park in 1909 and is today part of the Laponia World Heritage Site.

Stora Sjöfallet is a waterfall in the Stora Lule River. The falls are located in the Laponia World Heritage Site. The waterfall was formerly very magnificent and was often called the "Niagara of the North", and was the main reason for the creation of Stora Sjöfallet National Park.
