In Gammelstad Church Town you find 408 church cottages, the biggest medieval stone church in Northern Sweden, private homes, a parish storehouse and much more. A great deal has happened in Gammelstad since the 15th century, when the church was built. Luleå was originally founded in Gammelstad and it was here it grew from a small church and trading site into a real town . At the end of the 17th century, however, the city had to be moved to where it is today, and people began to call the Church Town “Luleå gamla stad”, popularly known as “Gammelstad” — which simply means old town. Many people, from the outlying villages and from further away have visited Luleå. Among the more prominent visitors was Carl Linnaeus, who arrived to Gammelstad around Midsummer 1732.
The first cottages were probably built during the 16th century. Long distances, tradesmen´s need of storage and overnight accommodation, the church stables, where the horses stood while the people attended church services, and last but not least the obligation of the inhabitants to go to church regularly were the reasons why the number of church cottages slowly but surely increased. The irregular siting of the cottages indicates that they were added gradually and when needed. Initially people from the same village had their cottages adjacent and placed them along the villages´ access road to the church. Once all the streets were lined with cottages, the land between the roads was filled with buildings. This created alleys and so called “smog”, i.e. the narrow passages between the church cottages.
